Superfood Spotlight – Cacao
You may have noticed that we really like cacao! We use raw cacao in many of our products, not only because it tastes amazing but because of the host of nutrients that it contains.
In a study comparing cocoa to other fruit powders, it came out on top for antioxidant content and polyphenol content. Pholyphenols are helpful for regulating enzyme function and stimulating cell receptors and antioxidants help or stop cell damage caused by oxidation. Having a good supply of these cant be a bad thing! The study concluded that cocoa could legitimately be called a super food. ‘Studies strongly suggest that cocoa has several beneficial effects on cardiovascular health, including the lowering of blood pressure, the improvement of vascular function and glucose metabolism, and the reduction of platelet aggregation and adhesion.’ (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22684995). Cocoa has also been found to have beneficial effects on insulin response.
We use raw cacao powder in all of our brownies, 3 out of 4 flavours of our protein bites and you can find it in our brownie baking mix and cacao cookie mix. So you don’t have to look far to find it at un-Refined®! We are pretty big fans.
